INDO-TIBETAN ART & CULTURE STUDY GROUP Tibet House LECTURE Mr. Janhwij Sharma will give an illustrated talk on “Conservation of Ta Prohm Temple, Cambodia” at Tibet House Conference Hall at 5:30 p.m. Janhwij Sharma is conservation architect by training who undertook his bachelors in architecture from Department of Architecture, Amritsar (completed in 1991) followed by Masters in Conservation from the Institute of Advanced Architectural Studies, the University of York, UK (1997). He is at present Director (conservation) of Archaeological Survey of India. Prior to that he has been associated with INTACH and has worked on a wide range of projects. He has undertaken listing of buildings and sites at various places including high altitude regions of Ladakh, Zanskar, Lahaul-Spiti and Kinnaur (Western Himalayan Region). Besides this Janhwij’s avid interests include architectural photography. He has four solo photo-exhibitions to his credit on the theme of “Architectural Heritage of Western Himalayas”. His first exhibition of photographs was held at Tibet House. He was in the visiting faculty of two architecture colleges in Delhi for five years. He has published several articles pertaining to architecture and conservation in leading national and international architectural journals and magazines. The well-illustrated presentation is divided into two parts, gives a general overview of mediaeval art and architecture, of Angkor region, and a detailed overview of ASI’s conservation initiatives in a 12th Century temple of Ta Prohm and challenges faced by the ASI team while executing the works at site. ASI has been working towards the conservation of the late 12th Century temple, called Ta Prohm, a Buddhist monastic institution, built by King Jayavarman VII. The project, initiated at the behest of the Cambodian Government, is a 10 year long programme which not only conserves the physical fabric of the temple complex but also preserves the unique symbiosis between built and natural environments. Conservation of the Ta Prohm temple complex is an extremely complicated work and challenges include conserving temple structures with trees growing above it and effective drainage management of the entire site. We will start with a cup of tea at 5:15 p.m. All are cordially invited. R S V P: 2461-1515 |
